LEAD SERVICE LINE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

At New Jersey American Water, providing safe, reliable water service is our top priority. In 2021, the state of New Jersey enacted a law that requires all water providers to share with customers the material of the utility-owned and customer-owned service lines that lead to their property, notify customers with service lines that are lead or galvanized steel, and replace them by 2031.

We are committed to meeting this goal and as a result we developed and launched our Lead Service Line Replacement Program. Below you can learn more about the program, engage with the interactive map to search your address and if your service line is listed as unknown, take steps to help self-ID the material. If the customer-owned portion of your service line is determined to be made of lead or galvanized steel, we’d like to work with you to replace it at no direct cost to you. Under a signed agreement with each customer, New Jersey American Water will perform the work, and provide a warranty, and the customer will retain ownership of the new water service line once installed. Read more about how the program works on our FAQ page.

Please note if your service lines contain lead, it does not mean you cannot use water as you normally do. Your water continues to meet water quality standards. We treat water to prevent corrosion of service lines and household plumbing, and our ongoing lead and copper compliance testing continues to meet state and federal water quality regulations, including those set for lead.
